Dancing to Fight Cancer

John Fitzhugh, a longtime friend of Robert, is taking part in the Charlotte Ballet’s Dancing with the Stars Event on March 2nd, and we want to show him our support! Inspired by his wife, Cassell, a two-time breast cancer survivor, John and his dance partner Elizabeth Truell will be dancing to raise funds and awareness for Novant Health’s Cancer Prevention and Early Detection Program.

Cassell was diagnosed with cancer following the birth of their fourth child. Her fight with breast cancer, coupled with the fear and anxiety that accompanies a life-threating diagnosis, inspired John to focus on ensuring every individual has access to quality healthcare. He joined Novant Health Presbyterian Medical Center Foundation’s board where he currently serves as Board Chair. His hope is that his three daughters and their generation will not have to face the devastating diagnosis of breast cancer.

As John said, “When Cassell went through her two experiences with breast cancer, we were so fortunate to receive great medical care and cannot imagine going through the process without financial and emotional support. Many women are afraid to get an exam, fearing the costs associated not only with the testing but any follow-up treatments. Cancer does not recognize economic barriers and neither should we in providing quality care.”

“This program saves lives and helps guide families through an often confusing process with both financial support and guidance. I agreed to dance as a way to honor Cassell and all those who supported us with wonderful care and love during her two bouts of breast cancer.”
